The Bachelor

I’m guilty of following most of The Bachelor even though I am in complete doubt of the sincerity of the setup.  I know of one successful outcome, that of Trista and Ryan Sutter‘s, and although I don’t exactly believe in “luck” either, I guess that’s what they ran into.

I don’t mean to sound so jaded about it, and I am genuinely happy for them and to other successful couples who got together through similar situations (e.g., blind dates, “setups”, etc.), and I don’t mean to judge anyone, but tonight’s finale of The Bachelor (starring Jason Mesnick) really turned me off, as a woman, and as someone who really takes romantic relationships seriously.

To make the long story short, Jason proposed to Melissa and said goodbye to Molly, but ended up chasing after Molly and ending it with a clearly pissed off (quite understandably so) Melissa. And all this on national TV.

I feel so disgusted at how it had to be done on television.  I’m not surprised at all, but it doesn’t make me feel any better about this kind of exploitation either.  As doubtful as I am about the whole concept, there’s still that side of me that believes in the sincerity of the women’s feelings for this man.  I don’t judge Jason for his change of heart either — I’m giving him the benefit of the doubt, because it does happen.

But I would’ve understood and happily accepted it if he decided to break the news to both Molly, and most especially Melissa, in private.  It was very insensitive, but again, I’m not surprised.  Television is that kind of business.  It’s all about the juice and the ratings.

Wow, what a downer ey?  And from frickin’ The Bachelor?  Hehe.  I guess I’m just not comfortable seeing so many things in this world taint the sacredness of love so recklessly.  But it’s also fascinating, because things do happen.  People are fickle, insensitive, exploitative, etc.  We all have that jackass side in all of us.

Oh but if I were Melissa, I would’ve broken his nose on national TV.  😛
